This Graphic Novel Library located in New York City looked to contrast the concepts of Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library. By deforming the box, flipping, and simplifying certain strategies that Kahn developed in his organization of the program I was able to find a new typology of the library. One that creates a more organic flow within the building and generates Piranesian-type circulation.
In direct contrast to Kahn’s book stack location, The Graphic Novel library’s stacks are found connected with the exterior of the building and following the undulating form. This generates a wandering path of books and shelves, creating intimate areas similar to Kahn’s reading carrels.
The Exeter Library’s central void allows for floor-to-floor visual interaction and creates a large cavernous space in the center while four smaller voids at the corners handle circulation. In direct opposition, this new library utilizes the central area for programmatic necessities. It utilizes the undulating form to generate four voids that reach out to each arm of the library aiding in not only the visual connection from floor to floor but circulation as well.
